Each year Tamir-Cheshire Community Programme’ (www.tamir.org.pk) observe International Disability Day on 3rd December ‘in the District Faisalabad for the sensitization of local community on disability issue and promote the rights of disabled people.

Tamir with the support of Leonard Cheshire Disability, Allied Bank and Social Welfare Department carried out awareness rally by promoting (United Nation Convention on the Rights of People with Disability) UNCRPD and demand the rights of disabled people.

People from all walk of life specially disabled people, family members of disabled, community leaders, women and children, Tamir staff and government official participated with great enthusiasm in this awareness walk and rally passed through the street slums of Faisalabad, whereas all Print Media and Electronic Media such as ‘Express TV Channel’ On-Air this advocacy activity on Television for nation wide awareness. Participants were demanding rights of Disabled People and chanting slogan to ratify the UNCRPD.

Vice Chairman Mr. Bukshish Yousaf and EDO Community Development Mr. Chaudhry Nawaz gave interview to TV channel and News Reporters and said.

‘Pakistan is signatory of UNCRPD on 25th September, 2008 but till today this convention have not been ratify by the government so we demand that government should ratify this convention as soon as possible. Our NGO, Tamir Welfare Organization always promote and protect the human rights of all persons with disabilities, including those who require more support that is intensive and the importance of individual autonomy and independence, including the freedom to make their own choices.

It was emphasizes that children with disabilities should have full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms as other children and the family is the natural fundamental unit, which is entitled to get protection by government and society. It is vital that persons with disabilities and their family members should receive the necessary protection and assistance to enable families to contribute towards the full and equal enjoyment of the rights of persons with disabilities.’

About 200 community people participated in this advocacy campaign.
