Disability Scenario in Pakistan:
Population of Pakistan is approximately 165,803,560,
with 24% of people– around 38 million –living below the
national poverty line and a population growth rate of
2.09%. The most recent census statistics on disability,
from 1998, show that there were 3,286,630 people with
disabilities comprising 2.49 % of the total population.
The
Disabled Person (Empowerment and Rehabilitation)
Ordinance of 1981 protects the employment, welfare and
rehabilitation rights of disabled people and this
ordinance implemented through the ‘National Council for
the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons’. Most disabled
children do not attend school. Overall, at primary
level, 50% of girls and 28% of boys are out of school.
Community Based Rehabilitation
(CBR) Work of Tamir:
We are providing Community Based rehabilitation (CBR)
services to more than 650+ disabled people of Faisalabad
District mainly focusing 'Women with Disabilities' and
Children with Disabilities" in the urban slums and rural
Faisalabad.
Tamir has partnership
with Leonard Cheshire Disability, UK (www.lcdisability.org)
since 1998 and running CBR programme called ‘Tamir
Cheshire Community Programme (TCCP). Since 2002, this
programme grown into its current form, which includes:
• Referral of disabled
people to appropriate government hospitals and
rehabilitation centers
• Medical camps in urban
and rural areas of District Faisalabad
• Vocational training for girls such as beautician,
cooking and sewing centers
• Mother and Child health Care service
• Micro credit and home industries for women & self help
groups
• Promoting employment for young women
In 2006, TCCP started a
five year Inclusive Education Project’ to help children
with disability to be enrolled into mainstream schools
and support in their retention by sensitization schools
administration and peer groups.
Social Rehabilitation of
Disabled Girls:
Women with disabilities are most disadvantage persons in
the community especially in the urban slum and rural
area of Pakistan. Living in isolation made their live
vulnerable and miserable therefore, Tamir gave
opportunity to Women with disabilities to live
independent live and help them in their empowerment.
Tamir is running Vocational Training Center for girls
since 2002 in which Able & Disabled girls are learning
together different kind of skills such sewing, cooking,
and beautician courses in inclusive setup. We also
believe that Women with Disability have right to marry
and start family life.
Since 2007, for the
Social Rehabilitation and independent living of young
disabled women, our CBR committee is working on this
issue. On 3 December 2007, 'Collective Wedding
Ceremony’, programme was arranged and 10 poor disabled
girls were married. Print & Electronic media highlight
this even a unique and heart touching event first time
happened in Pakistan. Similarly, in the year 2008, we
arranged 20 joint marriages of disabled couple on 3rd
December 2008 in 'Collective Wedding Programme'.
We promote UN CRPD
(Article 23) for advocacy and promotion of UN CRPD at
national level. Tamir also performed other activities
for the sensitizations of disability rights and UN CRPD
at National level and carried out workshop, seminar and
Rallies.
Improving sanitation and hygiene Condition of Disabled
Families:
To improve the living
condition of disabled families in the urban slums of
Faisalabad, we are working with more than 50 disabled
families in order to improve accessible Toilet
facilities on self-help basis. This project have
drastically improved the quality of life of disabled
people especially women with disabilities in the
community. Accessibility survey shows that more than 278
disabled families in the urban slums areas for
Faisalabad need urgently accessible toilets and we
request donors and philanthropist through the platform
of ‘Rehabilitation International’ to help ‘Tamir’ in
this ‘Accessible Toilet Construction’. We are look for
partner under CBR project to help us improve sanitation,
health and hygiene of 278 disabled families.
Literacy
Centers (Education for All):
Since 2005, Tamir is working with ‘Literacy Department’
Government of Punjab and have been running 25 Adult
Literacy and 25 NFB Literacy Centers in the Rural
Faisalabad called Samundri town, Faisalabad. About 1500
female are learning reading and writing skill through in
50 Literacy centers. We tried our best to include
disabled girls in this literacy project and an estimated
100 girls with disabilities are learning reading and
writing as well as life learning skills.
Capacity Building of Health Workers in Tuberculosis
Management:
Pakistan has a population of over 150 million. Despite a
rapidly expanding economy, there are still high levels
of poverty, especially among women in rural areas.
Around 300,000 people in Pakistan develop TB every year
and the World Health Organization ranks Pakistan as 8th
in the world for the highest burden of TB.
Tuberculosis Problem in
Pakistan: Since 2004, Tamir is working with 'Target TB'
in Pakistan for the eradication of TB diseases and
capacity building of 'Lady Health Worker and Volunteers.
The project aims to
improve access to TB health services and raise awareness
in the urban slums and rural areas of Faisalabad,
Pakistan, by training local health workers in TB control
and carrying out comprehensive health education
programmes.
Since 2007, we have
trained 500+ health workers and volunteers from 50
private and public health institutions in TB management
to increase TB identification and provision of DOTS
treatment support.
We are carrying out
outreach activities in rural areas where communities
have difficulty reaching health services and helping
people to access to tests and treatment.
We are raising awareness
about TB by holding health education workshops in
schools and amongst village leaders and by distributing
informational materials in local languages. By using
Audio visual equipment, we also used to show films about
TB and HIV which has proved highly effective.
Networking with other
organizations:
We have Networking with NGOs/CBOs and Self Help Groups
working in the field of health, education and disability
sectors. Tamir charity is members of different Networks
locally and internationally such as CBR Network of
Pakistan, CBR Network Work of South Asia, Stop TB,
Rehabilitation International, Global Alliance of Leonard
Cheshire Disability and NATPOW-Pakistan.
Beneficiaries:
Each year more than
6000+/- poor and disadvantage community members are
direct and indirectly beneficiaries of Tamir’s Programme.
The beneficiaries of Tamir belong to poor communities
living in urban slums and rural Faisalabad. |
